Early 2009 iMac shuts down randomly

My iMac has been operating wonderfully until about a month ago, when out of the blue it started shutting down at random times. I cannot seem to find a pattern to the instances it shuts down. Sometimes I am actively doing something and other times the computer is sitting idle. I do usually have a web browser open (Safari or Chrome), which seems to be one of the main consistencies. Otherwise I can't figure out what's causing the shutdown. Anyone have any suggestions or ways to troubleshoot? I don't even know where to start. Thanks in advance!

(I have tried an SMC reset as I've seen mentioned in other similar posts, but the problem has continued.)

Thanks for the response. I have not added or exchanged memory. I backup regularly with Time Machine and an external drive. I'm verifying the disk right now, so I'll respond with any results. No, I haven't really installed any of those types of apps. I did install a temperature sensor monitor, as I read in another post that it could be overheating related ... but I don't know what to make of the temperatures I'm seeing. I don't know what's "normal."

Verify Disk should say "the volume seems to be OK" at the end. Did it?

About the "temperature monitor", which temperature monitor is that? (the mac shuts down when the CPU temperature is too high, about 100 °C).

It can be temperature related, what temperature did you read when it shut down?

Can you give a screen shot of the "memory pressure" in Activity Monitor (take the three memory windows together), when you are running normally? And also of the %CPU column with the ten highest % (click the CPU button on top, then the %CPU column to have the highest % on top).

In Verify Disk, here is what I got when I clicked on the drive itself (and not the name Macintosh HD below it):

I downloaded an app called "Temperature Monitor." Here are the temperatures it's showing when I'm running at normal:

I've never seen the CPU sensors get close to 212 F.

Here's the memory pressure window in Activity Monitor:

... and the top ten highest for %CPU:

You have a very frustrating software on your system: CleanMyMac should be uninstalled completely ⚠, and check that CleanMyDrive is removed from SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/LoginItems Tab, remove with the minus sign underneath.

Then restart, and see.

Run another etrecheck later, because there may be some more software that is not "cooperative". But I will look at that when CleanMyMac is removed first (it may be even enough to solve the issue).

Thanks for the recommendations. I uninstalled CleanMyDrive and removed it from Login Items as well. Then I did a restart. Here are the new results from etrecheck:

I was already afraid of this: the CleanMM is only partly uninstalled, you should have used the uninstaller in the CleanMM menu; but OK, now do this:

In Finder go to (yourname) ˜/Library/LaunchAgents/ and delete the two com.macpaw.CleanMyMac... entries.

If you do not find them in your Homefolder Library, look in HD /Library/LaunchAgents.

2.

In SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/LoginItems, remove Monitor and AdobeResourceSynchronizer, use these only manually when you may need them, they do not have to run continuously I think; you may even not need AdobeRS at all.

OK, restart and see what happens.

The advice you're getting is good. Definitely check with http://www.covenanteyes.com to ask if their software is known to work with Mavericks, and if I were you, remove it in any case.

Certainly, there's a newer version than you have : Mac seems to be a 2.3.1 now

http://www.covenanteyes.com/files/releases/

and that may have solved some problems

Thanks for the advice. I updated to the most recent version of Covenant Eyes and restarted my machine.

At this point, I guess it'll just take time to see if all of this has helped. So far I have not experienced a shutdown since restarting... but I will repost if I do.

Thanks LexSchellings and andyBall_uk for your help so far. I greatly appreciate those of you who understand so many of these details that most of us don't.
