Jan 31, 2014 6:09 PM in response to DougE47by Leofarnsworth,I cannot fix your problem, but I can get you through the moment. I had the same experience and still cannot figure out how to get rid of the old Pages.
Anyway, open finder
choose Applications
look for and choose Pages, I can only find the new version even though the old version remains on my doc
now try to open the files you could not open
Best to you

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Note: Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

Jan 31, 2014 6:19 PM in response to PeterBreis0807by Leofarnsworth,Just read some of your posts. So you are recommending I trash Pages 5 and keep the older version. I don't see the older version of Pages in my applications folder. Will I be left with no word processor?

Jan 31, 2014 6:28 PM in response to Leofarnsworthby DougE47,That certainly got me in the right direction. I see both Pages applications in the applications file. I have been able to remove the older version from the doc and install the newer version there. Now I at least can open my most recent files. Have yet to see what happens with older versions.
They have really made this complicated without providing any direction on how to work through it. Thanks so much for heading us off in the right direction. (I may be back later.)

Jan 31, 2014 6:35 PM in response to Leofarnsworthby PeterBreis0807,I make a point of providing detailed, precise posts, for the reason exactly the same questions are asked hundreds of times in this forum.
Have you looked in the iWork folder inside your Applications folder as directed?
Have you read the details in the link?
The Mac comes with lots of choices for Word Processors. TextEdit which is extremely capable and opens and saves in Word .doc/x is part of your System.
LibreOffice (free) is also a viable alternate choice as are dozens of other Apps. including MsOffice for Mac.
