Mouse driver hijacked?

I'm using the Microsoft Intellipoint mouse driver, version 8.2, My Intellimouse Optical 1.1A has 5 buttons that can be assigned modifier keys and so on. Every time I reboot, or put the computer to sleep, the Wheel Button assignment reverts to 'Next Application', which I suppose is the default. I have set it to Option + Click. Is anoyone else seeing this? It seems like the OS is hijacking the mouse operation because at these times the mouse pointer speed changes to 'very fast' tracking speed, which is how I have System Preferences/Mouse set.
