you need to turn on synchronisation in isync preferences before you can sync contacts and calendars

when I plug my phone into my windows laptop I it says you need to turn on synchronisation in isync preferences before you can sync contacts and calendars? how do I do this? it has been working fine for the last few years.

iPhone 5, iOS 7.0.4
