"mobile device helper has stopped working"

My "mobile device helper has stopped working" i have tried everything to get it working again computer has vista, by using all the help on here. Itunes loads fine, I connect my phone and that message pops up on my screen multiple times and itunes doesn't recognise my phone....I currently have a 3gs but i need to back it up as Im getting an iphone 4 anyone help me......
