iIMac mid 2011 memory upgrade. can I install an 8 gig card in each of the 2 top slots to get 16 gigs? leaving bottom slots empty or does every slot have to be used? It came with 2gigs in each top slot, bottoms empty.

I'd add 2 x 4 GB in the two bottom slots for a total of 12.
