We have this problem due to security settings at work. Solution is to turn off all network connections and run the install as administrator. Right click the exe and the option to run as administrator will show up. Once loaded, you can reconnect to the network.

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.

Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:

Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:

Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").

Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.

Does it install properly for you?

If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

Doublechecking. You're also getting an error 2 during the standalone AppleApplicationSupport.msi install?

Walk us through the AAS install ... does it say it completed successfully? Or does it just sort of stop and vanish, and then when you try launching iTunes later, you get the error 2 again?

Okay. That suggests it's failing silently.

Can you check something for me? If you're using XP, head into your Add/Remove Programs control panel. If you're using Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, head into your Uninstall a program control panel.

Is Apple Application Support currently showing up in there as an installed program?

i am having the same problem. i have uninstalled and reinstalled maybe 5 times. same error every time! apple application support does not show up as an installed program.

if i have done this (yesterday) and reinstalled and it follows through till i get ""a "apple mobil device" failed to start. please verify that you have sufficent privelages to start system services"" error???

I am even attempting to " repair" all files and try to see if i can get apple to even open ... been following apple advice and even dropped firewalls to reinstall

Try installing the individual components, Apple Application Support, Bonjour and iTunes. That should at least get you to a point where iTunes opens. If you don't have an iOS device then as far as I can tell you don't need AMDS. If you do it may install more smoothly once the other components are in place. I'm going to check if I can install the components in safe mode because one of the symptoms that b noir has spotted seems to be to do with stopping & starting services. Safe mode disables most non-essential ones so that might be a way to force the update to take.

If you don't have an iOS device then as far as I can tell you don't need AMDS.

Classics and nanos also use AMDS for some functions. So uninstalling AMDS can prevent them from being recognised.
