connect MacBook Pro to viewsonic monitor

How to connect a MacBook Pro to Veiwsonic 23" external monitor? I am a novice, so if anyone can explain this to me in simple terms, that would be great. The Apple store told me to use a mini display port to vga adapter, which I have plugged in, but cant seem to install a driver for OS. Viewsonic manual said something about colorsync for macs? It shouldnt be this difficult! Thank you.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

First you connect the monitor to the MBP. You will know right away if you have the correct adapter. (A wrong one will not fit.)

Next turn the monitor on, then turn the computer on.

Now click the Apple logo on the top left of the screen and select System Preferences.

In the second row of icons, click on Displays.

On the next pane, click Gather Windows. If you see two smaller panes, one titled Built in, the other Viewsonic, the computer is seeing the monitor.

The monitor manual should tell you how to set it up for best display.
