Q: Why does iMovie stop importing my tape from the camcorder even though it says it is still importing?

Same problem here. The import window says "Recording" and displays the running duration of the import, but when it is done and I close the import window, I consistently find that it really only saved the first 1.9 minutes of the clip.  Aaaargh!
