word 2004 exits

All of a sudden Word wouldn't launch. The window announces that MS Word quit unexpectedly. I tried all the suggestions on the MS page, still nothing. I tried to reinstall it, I got the same message. I uninstalled Office. Still the same message from the install disk.

What's going on and how do I fix it?

So I just looked at this page

None of my Office 2004 applications will open - Microsoft Community

and it looks like I might have some kind of malware.

Here's the complete message from when I tried to reinstall Word. It means nothing to me and I haven't a clue as to how I get rid of malware.

Would it work to just install the Apple version of MS Office?

Oh dear. I have no idea what Rosetta is. OK, I just read up on it in Wikipedia. It seems it wasn't included in 10.6 or later versions. But even if I had it, I wouldn't know what to do with it.

I ran the installer by clicking on the installer icon. (Which is how I did it before.) Does it not working now mean there's some kind of corrupted code or malware still remaining. I have removed everything I could find from my computer that says Microsoft. No difference.

Why did you emphasize the Code Type?

BTW, I am able to open the Word files in Open Office.

Running Universal Binary Applications in Rosetta on Mac OS X

PowerPC software cannot run directly on Intel hardware.

To ease the hardware transition, Apple built a PowerPC emulator called Rosetta into the Intel version of Mac OS X "Tiger" (10.4.x) through "Snow Leopard" (10.6.x). It was discontinued as of Mac OS X "Lion" (10.7.x).

Rosetta works transparently, meaning whenever you launch a PowerPC-native application, it will be automatically run through the Rosetta emulator.

Unfortunately, Intel-native applications cannot use Rosetta to load PowerPC-native plug-ins, drivers, or similar.

However, PowerPC-native applications, running through Rosetta, are able to load PowerPC-native plug-ins, drivers, etc.

Universal Binary applications, which typically include both PowerPC-native and Intel-native executables, can be set to "Open using Rosetta" -- meaning, they will run as PowerPC-native instead of the usually preferred Intel-native.

To enable this functionality, simply select the application and press Command-I, or select Get Info from the File menu. The Get Info dialog includes a checkbox labeled "Open using Rosetta." Tick the box, and close the window. From now on, whenever the application is launched, it will open in PowerPC mode, and PowerPC-native plug-ins, drivers, etc., will be available to it.

It is best to upgrade all components to Intel-native, because PowerPC-native applications running through Rosetta will run about 30% more slowly than Intel-native applications running on the same hardware.

I emphasized the code type because it seems to indicate a PowerPC app.

The Info box for the application disk does not include a check box for Open using. And even under Edit, the Open with is greyed out. Ditto for Office Setup Assistant on the ap. disk and the MS Office folder on the disk.

According to Wikipedia, "Rosetta is not installed by default in Mac OS X v10.6 "Snow Leopard" Could this be why?

Anyway, the first time I used this installer disk (obviously years ago) it opened and installed without problem.

Rosetta is semi-automatically installed under Snow Leopard (if it was not previously installed) the first time a PPC app is run.

There may be some confusion generated by the fact that Rosetta is an optional install in Snow Leopard. However, if the OP has been running it and it suddenly does not launch, then Rosetta has already been installed.

Any more information on the issue of Rosetta will just confuse the OP!

Feb 2, 2014 5:05 PM in response to MlchaelLAX

So the issue isn't a Rosetta problem. That still leaves me with my original problem of Office not working and even not reinstalling. What I wonder is why not. Is it malware? If so, what should I do? If I don't use Office do I have to do anything? As in if I do nothing will other programs be affected?

I find I can open files in OpenOffice. And probably Pages will work as well. Do I just do that and forget about it?

Not likely.

Have you tried creating another (admin) user account and see if it'll install under that account?

That's always a good test of a permissions problem on your account.

Just for giggles, I uninstalled Office 2011 on my Snow Leopard machine and put Office 2004 on it. It went without a hitch, including the six updates to get it to 11.6
