New tab in Safari no longer defaults to address bar

Hi!

Just what it says. Is this a new thing in Safari and it updated on me when I wasn't looking? I always open a new tab and start typing in a website that I want to go to. However, now, if I open a new tab, what I type in is typed into google search as that is my homepage. I tried switching my homepage to something that didn't have an obvious bar to type things into, but it still doesn't default to the address bar. Every time I open a new tab, I have to click on the address bar in order to start typing in the new website address. Its a bit annoying since I'm just so used to being quick and snappy, and I open new tabs all day (at work, because I have to search for scripts to runs and manuscripts to research) and at home, because I check webcomics and open new tabs while the other ones load.
