iCloud sync between Mac and iPad

I have just updated my 2012 MacBook Pro to Mavericks. Notes and iBooks are not syncing, but Pages, music, email and other things are. Can't get to the root of the problem. I have checked all of my settings.

Any ideas.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Are the notes on the iCloud website?

Yes, Notes, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Mail and Reminders are all there. iBooks isn't on the list of Apps. That seems strange.

Make sure the Notes box is checked in the iCloud preference pane. Notes in the On My Mac category, if any, won't sync.
