"Apple Mobile Device" failed to start

After uninstalling, rebooting, and TRYING to install the latest version, I receive the following error WHILE INSTALLING:

"Service Apple Mobile Device (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

My choices are: Abort, Retry, Ignore.

I've tried all three. If I ignore and it finishes installing, I receive the error message: "This application has failed to start because MSVCR80.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

It does NOT fix the problem.

Please help. I cannot back up my iPhone without iTunes on my laptop.
