iPhone adds random photos to contacts

Problem: Majority of the contact pictures on my phone synced under iCloud have been randomly mixed up even after manually going through each contact my phone and icloud account to make sure picture assignment was correct.

For example, my friend's contact picture shows up as another friend. This happens when they call as well.

I check my Macbooks address book that is also syncing with iCloud and all the pictures are associated with the correct contact.

Why is this happening?

It is very time consuming going through about 300 contacts all the time to make sure they have the picture assignement, which likes to change every random time 😠
