tif vs tiff ?

Aloha, probably a silly question but can any one tell me the difference between a file that ends in .tif, and one that ends in .tiff, if there is one, or are they interchangable? I'm trying some mods to a Shiira theme, and some resourses are .tif, and others are .tiff. Mahalo in advance for any info. JB
