I cannot hear the music when playing on iTunes. When I restart my computer there is the restart tune that comes on, so I don't think the problem is the speakers.

If your speakers are selected and the volume is not turned down all the way, then...

I would do a SMC reset. Basically for a desktop mac you shutdown, unplug it, wait 15s, plug it back in, wait 5s, then restart your mac.

if that doesn't work then

Restart the mac and hold the alt-command-P-R keys at the chime. Keep holding them until you hear the chime for a second time. This should set programmable settings to their default state.

You may need to boot into recovery, check your HD for errors or maybe even reinstall the OS. Sorry I could not be of more help.

Thanks ssls6 for helping earlier.

We solved the problem of the sound not coming out when playing in iTunes: I went into iTunes and checked on the volume inside of iTunes, near the top of the window, located in the upper left of the iTunes window, near the player controls. There is a rectangular box with a triangle on the bottom. The speakers chosen was my Apple TV; Somehow, these settings were changed from Computer to Apple TV. A simple clicked fixed the problem.
