How to connect to internet with airport?

I have followed the steps here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260

But it does not work. Yes, I have used bridge mode and every other mode, but no go.

I am connected to the internet via a modem, and behind a wired only router. The Airport Express is connected to the wired router.

If I connect via wire directly to the router it works.

Thanks.

Hello,

Can you clarify if you are using just one or multiple Airport? Which Airport?

Could I suggest if it is single then reset the Airport using a pencil on the recessed reset button whilst powered on. And then start with the Airport Utility afresh, set up your SSID/password etc. The Airport should get an IP address from the modem and then give out DHCP. That should be a good starting point and should work for you. Just for connecting to the internet you shouldnt need to go into advance settings of the Airport Utility. Hope this works for you.

I have linksys router and an airport express attached to via ethernet.

I tried resetting it with that button, but the same problem remains. I wind up with an IP of 169.254.x.x instead of 192.168.x.x which is what I should have. At least, that's what I get when I attach it directly to the linksys router via wire ethernet. I can only assume it would be the same whether wired or not.

Thanks though.

Okay, so an IP address 169.254.x.x means that the computer isn't getting an IP address.

Try resetting the AE by holding the reset button down for 10seconds whilst powered on, this sets back to factory default.

So are you saying that if you connect your laptop to the modem via Ethernet cable you can connect to the internet?? Can you then connect the Airport Express using this same cable?? Try this again after the factory reset. You'll have to go through the setup procedure again but this should only take a minute.

Okay, so the router/modem is wired only. That correct? And your trying to use the Airport Express to provide wireless internet. Yes. So when you've reset the Airport Express to factory default the wireless SSID will appear randomly as AppleXYZ or something. Log onto that. Then if you've downloaded Apple Airport Utility, using that, you can configure your Airport Express with your SSID name of choice and security preferences. Shouldn't be much trickier than that. Of course you can go deeper and configure all sorts of other things, but that should connect your devices once logged on. Hope this helps!!
