iTunes not recognizing iPod after recent update

Recently updated to windows 8.1 and iTunes 11.1.4.62 and now I receive the error "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again". I have done this several times. iTunes is working properly otherwise. What can I do to resolve this?
