Do you have a cable/DSL modem? Does it contain its own router? Are you using it for your local wireless network?

It would help to tell us all about your current network hardware and setup. It's very difficult diagnosing such things based on piecemeal information.

An AEX must be connected to a cable/DSL modem via an Ethernet cable. It can then create a local wireless network. If you connect it to your computer then you can only create an ad hoc network.

Embarrassment abounds. The AEX is connected to the cable modem by an Ethernet cable. I was trying to add a work computer to my old network, but couldn't remember the password. My son suggested that I reset the router, which I did, but that also seems to have deleted the network. Hence the question and the lack of detail.

Use Airport Utility to configure the AEX to Join the network created by your modem/router. This is the equivalent of using Bridge Mode. The AEX can then allow other wireless devices to access the local network. Be sure to implement Security as WPA2 in the modem/router. You will configure the modem/router to its default settings. There should not be any need to change that. However, you will need to be able to access the modem/router to make the security changes, provide a network name and a network password. You will need those to also set up the AEX.

It would be a good idea to then start with everything turned off. Then turn on in succession the modem, the AEX, and the computer. Hopefully, this will get you back in business.
