macbook pro connecting to mac pro is intermittent

Thank you for your time. I just recently purchased a new retina macbook pro with mavericks on it. I love apple but i've just not been having a real good time with my macbook pro. My most recent problem has been with connecting to my mac pro. When i wake up my macbook pro and click on my mac pro icon 90% of the time the folders never show up. all i get is the spinning lines down in the bottom right of the window. I can eventually get it to connect by turning off and on wifi or rebooting the macbook pro. my apple products (except my iphone 5, that thing is an absolute disaster) are usually hassle free.

it would be great if anyone has had any experiences with this and has found a solution. thanks again.

other information:

my mac pro had osx lion on it (that may be the issue)

all share settings are turned on.

i'm using the new airport extreme.
