Cannot watch YouTube videos on Safari

I had installed a recent 10.6.8 update for Java for Mac OS X10.6 Update 17 and other updates (for printers, remote desktop client, migration assistant) and did normal permission repairs after the update before rebooting.

Now I cannot no longer view or watch YouTube videos on Safari (ver. 5.1.10) after the update. When a YouTube video page is loaded, all I got is a black out screen on where a YouTube video is located.

However I can view/watch YouTube vidoes on Firefox with no issue at all.

Just wondering if the update I described has something to do with Safari not being able to display YouTube videos? I'm not very tech-savvy but is YouTube video Flash-based or Javascript-based?

If it is Flash-based, my current version for Flash player is 12.0.0.3.8.

Go step by step and test.

1. System Preferences > Other/ Flash Player > Advanced > Delete All

Press the "Delete All" button

Install Adobe Flash Player.

Follow the prompts.

Quit Safari.

Restart computer. Relaunch Safari.

2. Turn off Extensions, if any.

Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Now try YouTube.

I had this problem and found so many complex workarounds that involved like 15 steps to complete, including rebooting and such. Nothing worked and then I found this - SO SIMPLE- I just had to share. You're welcome! Whatever your current setting is, just go to this page and toggle your setting to either use default HTML5 player or don't, just so long as you change it. Took 2 seconds.

Hi I've got a similar problem that has developed recently. I followed your instructions to the letter without success

I can watch embedded YouTube clips on other sites but not YouTube itself. A basic page appears with smaller icons of the clip squashed to the left hand side of the page with the URL

https(followed by the lock) m.youtube.com / ? ( / ? in grayscale)

It appears I can try to play or share it but on doing so a pop up appears with

Quick Time player can’t open “video.3gp”

The file may be damaged or may not be a movie dil that is compatible with Quick Time Player.
