Folders and documents disappeared from my desktop

After I updated to Mavericks OS all the folders and documents as well as the icon for any mounted device (like my backup external HD) and my hard drive icon (Macintosh HD) disappeared. However, when I open the Finder they are there, and I can open them. So I haven't lost any content, but I would like for everything to show on my desktop again. Also the Dock is in place and operates fine. Here is what I have tried so far:

--In DIsk Utility, I ran Verify Disk. Everything appears to be OK.

--I reset the PRAM.

--I reinstalled Mavericks OS.

I am not sure where to go from here. I have read several other somewhat similar questions to the support community, but none quite match my problem. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

Hi rookie29,

If you are not seeing your hard drive or other mounted volume icons on your desktop, you may find the following article helpful (it's aimed at 10.6, but the same options should be there in Mavericks):

Mac OS X v10.6: How to show your hard drive icon on the desktop
