iCal not launching

Hello

I am using OS Mavericks (10.9.1) on my 2009 MBP. I tried opening iCal today (as I normally would, by clicking the icon in the dock). The icon bounces once and nothing happens. I tried finding a solution online. One user suggested removing the Preferences plist for ical, which I did. Still, iCal did not launch. Then, another user suggested removing ical and reinstalling. As I have the disks for Snow Leopard, I reinstalled iCal.

When I try to launch iCal from the Application folder, I now receive the following message: "You can't use this version of the application "iCal" with this version of OS X. You have "iCal" 4.0."

Now what? Any suggestions? Many thanks!

I updated to Mavericks from SnowLeopard, at that time I used Dropbox to sync iCal between two computers. When I updated to Mavericks iCal stopped working. I thought it could be because of the Dropbox sync and removed the folder from Dropbox but that did not help. At first when I opened iCal it would crash. Now, for some strange reason it no longer crashes, but there are no calendars whatsoever, and if I try to add a calendar or an event, iCal crashes. This happens on my MacBookPro and iMac. What can I do? Is there any way of avoiding a full re-instalation of Maveriks?

Thanks
