Vanishing files in Finder

When I search my USB drive for documents modified in the last 7 days to backup the Finder window lists the correct files but then the list disappears off the top of the window, then reappears, then disappears and this continues not giving me the opportunity to select the files to copy to my backup disk.


How do I stop the list of files disappearing ?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

The USB was originally in the USB port on my iMac keyboard so just in case the keyboard was a factor I put the USB in the USB port at the rear of the iMac and the same thing happened.


I then put the USB in a MacBook and again the same thing happened.


When I use the same search criteria on the optical drives on the iMac and MacBook the list of files doesn't diasappear. It looks as if searching the USB is the problem
