Can not share my ethernet connection through wifi (create an access point/bridge) when other wifi networks are available

I have a Macbook Retina with Maverics 10.9.1 installed.

I am trying to share the ethernet connection (connected through thunderbolt ethernet adapter) through wifi, (System settings->Sharing->Internet sharing Thunderbolt ethernet to only wifi)

When there are no other wifi networks around, I can see an access point named after my computer in my other devices (an android phone, an ipad tablet, and an kobo ebook reader)

However, when there are other wifi networks (some of them are public), even though I am not connected to them, the access point is not created, nor I can see the connection sharing icon on the wifi status display.

The internet connection is a DHCP connection.
