I want to reduce my hard drive photo file storage- How do I do this?

I have maxed out on hard drive storage and have installed a time machine back up external hard Drive. I want to remove photos from my hard drive and be able to access them when needed.

Do I just remove iPhoto from my hard drive and recover it from Time machine when I want to review photos? I have about 8 gigs of photos.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

No. You copy them to an unused volume on that ext HD or use another. Trying to use TM to access them isn't doable. All you can do is restore them, then you're back to where you started.
