Cmd-TAB is not working in 10.9

Hi,

since Mavericks the application switcher is not working correct. When I switch to an other application using cmd-TAB the menue of the other application is shown, but no windows of this application will be shown. In older versions of OS X the app switching via cmd-TAB was no problem.

Is ist possible to bring back the old behavior of the shortcut cmd-TAB?

Deleting the preferences folder completly (user) and shutdown the system per terminal (no process should be able to write any preferences) does not solve the problem. I have also removed all preferences panes and this din’t solve the problem too.

… by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

There was another Problem: The zoom of the Dock was freezing and the klick into a menue had an other behavior than normaly. And this problem is gone after deactivating all Fonts and cleaning the font cache.

Deleting Spaces did not help.

But I should know it: I have deleted all my preferences earlier, and it was not helping. So it is not a problem of preferences. And when it is not a problem of preferences, deleting will change nothing.

I have now two options I think:

  • Transfer the user Data to a new user.
  • … or Delete/install Harddrive and import all from Backup.

Merely deleting the preference files of a running process will not do what you think it does in Mavericks.

Back up all data.

In the Finder, hold down the option key and select

Go Library

from the menu bar. From the Library folder, move the following item to the Trash, if it exists:

Application Support/Dock

and move the following items to the Desktop (again, some may not exist):

  • Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.dock.*.plist
  • Preferences/com.apple.dock.db
  • Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist

Here, * stands for a long string of letters and numbers.

Next, triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

open $TMPDIR../C

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. A folder should open. Inside it there may be a file named "com.apple.dock.iconcache". If there is, drag it to the Trash.

Log out, log back in, and test. If you still have the issue, put the items on the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the items.

Yes, I know. I put all preferences files in to the trash can, and immediately killed the system via terminal. So the systetem had no chance to write anything into the preferences folder. After reboot the preferences were reset to factory settings.

I still have the issue :-(

Back up all data.

Hold down the option key and select

Go Library

from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, move the entire contents of the subfolder "Caches" (not the folder itself) to the Trash, then log out and log back in. Empty the Trash. Test.

If the problem is not solved, open the Library folder again in the same way and move the entire contents of the subfolder "Preferences" (not the folder itself) to a new folder on the Desktop (not to the Trash.) Log out and log back in. The account will then be pretty much in a clean state. Test. If you can still reproduce the problem, then put the Preferences folder contents back, replacing any that were created in their place, log out, and log in again.

If you can't reproduce the problem in the clean state, then start putting things back in the Preferences folder piecemeal, starting with items that seem unrelated to the issue. I can’t be more specific. After each group of items, repeat the log out/log in cycle and test. At some point, the problem may reappear, in which case you know that something in the last batch of files you restored is at fault. If it never reappears, the problem is solved.

I've known problems like yours to be caused by forgotten spaces or multiple displays, including video adapters that were not connected to a display, or a display that was turned off. I'm taking your word for it that you have absolutely ruled out those possibilities.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

It’s not possible, I get tausands of error messages from Safari. :-( It seems that there is much more defect!

So, I think it’s better to reinstall the hole system and import all things from Backup.

But I found something interesting I think. Perhaps it brings some information about this problem:
