downloading firewire ipod

I had and old I think 3rd generation Ipod 30 GB with Firewire. I use to link it to my laptop but that died long ago. I currently have a ton of music loaded on it but would like to download it to my Macbook Air. It's all mine, not illegal. Is it even possible to get my computer to recognize it? I bought and adapter that switches the Firewre end to USB. I plug it in and nothing happens. Am I stuck charging this thing and usinging it till the drive dies
