Can't Transfer Files to External Hard Drive Anymore

I have a Toshiba External hard drive, 1 TB, (I've only used 140.51 GB) that I have been saving files and photos to. A window would pop up asking me what I wanted to use the hard drive for, and I always click decide later. The other day I accidentally clicked a different option and now it won't let me put pictures on it anymore and says read only. Is there a way I can change this back to where I can save my photos to the hard drive without erasing anything off of it?

We'll try our best.

Let's start off with the info on your home disk. It may look something like this:

If you disk is like mine, it will contain info at the bottom, in Sharing & Permissions. In a normal system, your system will be able to Read & Write. Well, somehow, you changed the Sharing & Permissions for your external disk.

This should be simple enough to fix. When you boot your external drive, go to the Sharing & Permissions section and choose "Read & Write". That should change your external disk from a Read Only disk to Read & Write.

There are two ways you should be able to do this.

As I'd expected, the "System" line on the Sharing & Permissions shows Read only. You should be able to toggle the Read only to Read & Write by tapping on the tiny arrow indicators under "Privilege."

If it's greyed out and you can't change things, you'll see a "Lock" in the right hand corner. Tap the lock, and enter your password.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back, we're dealing with poweroutages in my area. Are you talking about when I open the Info window? Because I don't see a small arrow that says privilege or a lock anywhere in the Info window. Maybe I'm not in the right place? Thank you for being patient with me and helping me with this.

With my external HD attached, press Command-i (information), and you'll see something like this:

User uploaded file

At the bottom, you'll see a section under Sharing & Permissions. You're interested in "system." If it says, "Read only," you're going to have to change it to "Read & Write."

How do you do this? Look at the "Read only" text in System. With your cursor, tap one of the two tiny arrows on the right. That's how you change "Read only" to "Read & Write." If you're still having a problem, you're going to have to tap the small lock icon in the right corner of the same screen. Enter your password, as this allows you to change system information.

Okay, this didn't work. Let's try another tack.

You see that graphic in this thread picturing the info about the Buffalo drive? On the bottom, it says "You can only read" and it lists the drives the device can read?

When several things are listed there, that's where you can change the "Read & Write" and "Read only" options. If, however, you don't see anything there (as jeking84 says), then you go to the little gold "lock" icon in the lower right hand side of the page. Tap that lock, and you can enter the password to access your password.

Do post on this thread, whether or not this worked for you. If possible, show a pic on this thread.

In that case, I can guarantee the drive isn't formatted for Mac. The drive can't be recognized because NTFS which is a PC format. OS X can read a NTFS drive and copy data on it to your iMac but it cannot write to NTFS. If the drive is going to be only used with a Mac then it needs to be reformatted in Mac OS Extended) Journaled). This is easy to do and is explained in:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3509

If you are going to share the external HD with PCs and Macs you can still do this, here is a MacWorld article that explains how:

I was putting pictures from my mac onto this drive, there is even a folder on the drive labeld Mac Driver and inside it has something labeled Tuxera NTFS for Mac.dmg. I guess the easiest thing to do will be go buy another external hard drive. I don't want to erase what's on this hard drive, and apparently it's not going to let me change it back to read and write. It just aggravating I paid $60 for this one and it has so much space left on it that I can't use now. It was my mistake, accidently clicking on the wrong option when that window popped up. (That's explained in my very first post on here) Thank you for all your help and being patient with me.

I think we're on the same page. If you want to reformat the drive, that means you're going to have to delete it and reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Read through these options:

Realize, I haven't tried this, but this is an option:

And this is an option, but double-check your operating system:

Even this might be an option:
