Q: i can't shut down my mac because the mail is opened, but it is not open, and in fact when i click on the mail icon nothing happens...it doesn't open

my desktop wont let me shut down.. it says "shut down mail first' but mail is not open.. and when i click on the mail icon, it wont even open
