Need help in using my GPRS connection to surf internet on macbook

Hi,

I have a Nokia 9300 communicator, with a GPRS conenction. I want to use it to connect to the internet on my macbook. Since I am in India, my service provider, not having sufficient knowledge of the mac, cannot help me with configuring it.

can anyone hwlp me here?

i want to connect using bluetooth. Also, although I can connect the phone to the macbook via bluetooth and can trabsfer files to & fro, I cannot syncronise my phone book.
How do I go about doing that??

Thanks in advance.

First off, the 9300 communicator (at least through cingular) does not support the profiles on the mac to be used as a bluetooth modem. I have seen scripts online to change this, and I have seen people manually edit them as well.

After that simply pair the phone and select "use this as my internet connection" and make sure to check "uses a higher speed data connection"

you will need to get some settings from your provider in India. At the very least you will need a telephone number to access (not a dial up number). For cingular it was *99# and changed to ISP.CINGULARGPRS.COM

you will also need a login name and password.

Select the proper modem script (nokia 3G GPRS 1)

To connect open internet connect, select bluetooth, and clock connect.

If it won't open the communication device or any other error try a different script. More can be found at this site. http://www.taniwha.org.uk/

If the computer disconnects go into system preferences> network> bluetooth> under the PPP tab select PPP options. Turn off "Send PPP echo packets"

Hopefully this will work. If the people at your cell provider can't provide the settings try visiting a store and getting them from the settings on a PDA or Smartphone.

Hi Brian, Thanks for that. I went to meet my service provider (Hutch) yesterday. What he told me is very close to yours. Here it is

First, when we have to make the new connection, there are 2 options - dial up or GPRS line. We tried GPRS line and set up as follows:
Username: Blank
Password:Blank
Number to dial 99**# or *99#
Here, the guy wants to know where we can enter the APN number - & I have no clue.
Second, using these settings, I got connected, the MB says it was authenticating user and my call also showed the "G" sign, but it went away after a second, giving me an error message - Could not negotiate connection with PPP server.

Just for curiousity sake, this guy tried his cell- a Nokia 6230. & it worked just fine. There was this problem, though, that every few seconds, the connectiion went off, giving the message that the modem had unexpectedly hung -up (& the poor guy's cell would switch off & on again on its own). But this is still distant for me.

I need your help in getting the modem script that you are talking about. I can only see 3 nokia modems- & they are all ir, none of them are for GPRS.

My problem is that there is no store or anything like that in India. I just bought the MB when in London recently, as it looked nice. Not very sure what to do now.

Awaiting more help

It looks like you are very close and just need to tweak the settings.

The lack of connectivity and drops sound like a modem script error. You need to go the the site listed in my first reply and download the updated Nokia scripts, and I would also grab the Generic scripts too. Save them to your "/library/modem scripts" folder. Once they are placed in the folder it will let you use them. Also, when trying different scripts go to "system prefs> networking> bluetooth> bluetooth modem" as it will allow you to see all of them and change them on the fly.

The APN number is the same as the telephone number, in your case *99# or 99**#

As far as using the 9300, right now it is not configured to be used as a bluetooth modem, so no matter what we do with the scripts it won't work. Any phone with Blackberry enabled will have the bluetooth limited to headset only use.

You are close. Make sure everything I said the first time has been done (ppp echo packets), try the new scripts, and go from there.

Thanks Brian,

Just two very quick questions before I get on with the trials.

1. How do I reach the library/modem scripts folder. I am very new to mac and have no idea
2. You say I should try and then say 9300 won't work?? I have only one phone - 9300. Should i try using the 9300 or first go buy a new phone? If it is just bluetooth, can I try with the cable?
The apple website states that the 9300i can be syncronised. Though it doesn't mention the 9300, I assumed that it would work. I thought the only difference between 9300 and 9300i was the camera. In case there is something Im missing let me know.

So you mean that the original Nokia 9300 with factory settings will not work BUT I can tweak the settings somehow to make it work. Thats a relief. I was not interested in buying a new phone right now.

Any idea which script I should be looking at. The site you mentioned has so many scripts that I am confused. It groups them for GSM phones and GPRS phones. As far as I know mine is a GSM phone, with GPRS facility. So which group do I go into??
Even I have the 9300, so I guess if it worked for you, it will for me as well.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Brian,

I'm a little lost.

i tried downloading the GPRS, GSM, 9110 communicator as well as the 3G scripts. Just saved them to my pen drive (using an XP machine) and saved them to the modem scripts folder.

The same problem exists. as a matter of fact, when i was trying to connect using the Nokia Infrared script, I was getting far enough where the connection would drop only when the computer was trying to authenticate the user. using these scripts, I don't even get far enough to the connection. using the infrared script, the error message said that it could not negotiate a PPP connection. Now, I simply see a message telling me I need to check my settings.

I have two Qs.

One. When creating an internet connection, I am asked if it is a dial up or GPRS/RTT or something. WHich one should it be?

Two. The site you pointed out says I need to first do something to the scripts with Stuffit. Right now, I am just copying them as I save them. Is there anything else I need to do here?

Sorry for being such a bother. But I would really appreciate if I can get this thing to work.

Hi,

I actually wrote in to Ross (www.taniwha.org.uk) and he replied saying I should try using the GSM or GPRS scripts. Although I did everything that he asked in the instructions, I could not get it to work. I was trying to get this on GPRS, I will try getting it on the dial up option.

The PPP packet option is always off, so not sure what else to do. Also, somehow, I have an option of PPoe that appears in the menu bar. I dont know how it got there and how to take it out.

How can I get back to the situation where there is no service activated. I mean, all the dialups, GPRS connections, airports, VPNs, etc are all erased and i can start afresh?

I am really losing hope with this now. Hope it works real soon.
