How do you install Remote Desktop on clients? Creating the client installation program fails every time I try. The error message is Apple unspecific ([translated] There was an error trying to access the required components. Please try again). This happens on the last page of the wizard.

Not sure what you're trying to do but Remote Desktop (the client version) is part of the OS and is already 'installed' on the clients. It's called ARDAgent and you can verify its existence by issuing this command:
system_profiler SPApplicationsDataType | grep ARDAgent
It should list its location.
It's possible to create a client installation program for machines. You can set whether Remote Desktop should be displayed in the menu bar, which users are allowed to access it and so on.
The corresponding option is located in the file menu. However, it always fails for me in the last step of the wizard. Is this working for anybody else?
I know what it does. It does not answer your question but for me why bother when it's already installed?
You can configure the setting using the kickstart command.
Because it's easier to create an installation program than to set it on every system manually (e.g. Remote Desktop not to show up in the menu bar).
This command works far quicker for me IMO:
/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/ki ckstart -activate -configure -clientopts -setmenuextra -menuextra no
Select your workstations and send the command as root. The above is all on one line.
