Seems to work fine on Mavericks. Still available from Apple if you don't have it.
Might look at freebie software Mpeg Streamclip.
Lots of compression options and easy to use.
You will need to download the QT 7.6.6 Player from Apple:
http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
You will then need to find your original name (the one that you had for "Registered to") and the registration code that goes with that name, you will then enter these to upgrade to QT Pro from the regular player.

I successfully added QT Pro to my clean install on a new computer with Mavericks. Seems to work fine for me.
