backup?

Hi, I don't use iCloud to backup I use an extenal drive.

But my question since I don't use iCloud to backup is if I make changes doesn't iCloud act more as a sync than a backup?

Or can you set iCloud to never delete unless "I" manually want to?

I hope that makes sense, iCloud is more sync than backup.

Thank you for your response.

Seriously it's not me.

Now if your asking in the 3rd person,

I don't believe money is a problem, I think she is looking for security, and an easy wasy to do it.

She has lots of photo's, and thats how this discussion got started.

Basically, she would appreciate input from someone she knows (reliable source 🙂 ) but I know there is so much to consider, I think something along the lines of "What would you use" would work for her.

Thanks.

I know this isn't fair because backing up precious photo's, doc's is serious to understand. Most people want easy, and secure and reading a lot of sites confuses them.

As I mentioed to Csound1 I use ext. hd's.

I'm not entirely sure but money shouldn't be a problem, time to uplaod (not sure), security (sure), back ups to back ups is what I've been trying to get through to her.

So if any of you had a choice between a couple of backup plans, let me know and I'll pass them on.

Thanks.

Backblaze gets very good reviews - it is strictly a backup service, no file sharing, no sync service, just backup and restore (and only data files, not the OS or any applications). $50/year, unlimited storage.

Personally, I just don't trust any online service - you are then putting your data in someone else's care and trusting it will all work out if needed. I use hard drives - one for a Time Machine backup (about as simple as you can get), and two for whole system clones (one kept off site).

Honestly, you need to convince your friend that if these data are truly precious to her, then she needs to "suck it up" as they say and learn how to implement some good data backup and recovery practices. Ultimately, nobody looks out for you and your stuff other than you.

P.S. even my 86 year old Mom uses Time Machine and a hard drive to backup her iMac - TM is really about as painless and simply a system as you could ask for.
