iTunes will not sync to my iPhone 5s

When I sync on my mac, it gets through the first few steps then cancels itself. Other times sync is unable to start. The same thing was happening on my 4s, and this was part of the reason i got a new phone.

This is particularly annoying because i cannot transfer music onto my phone. When i drag music onto the phone, it appears, but is ghosted and greyed out.
