lost all contacts during system upgrade

did everything in order, as instructed.

wiped my contacts clean.

now, i try to do 'restore' from earlier backup, and continually get error message, (-1), interrupted, etc.

have tried everything to get my contacts back.

they are sitting in a backup file somewhere on my hard drive.

please help.
