Lost iphotos

I have an i Mac OSx 10.6.8 and iPhoto 6.06 and lost my photos. I moved some of them from my external harddrive to my iPhoto and most of them got copied there in triplicate. My iPhoto is also freezing up intermitantly. What can I do about this short of purchasing a new computer.

First you need to tell us what you did and exactly how you did it

I moved some of them from my external harddrive to my iPhoto and most of them got copied there in triplicate.

This sounds like you imported an iPhoto library into your main iPhoto library - di you? Note - you NEVER import one iPhoto library into another one - it does not work and creates a massive mess

If yoou did then did you have any photos you want to keep in the library on the main computer?

If you did then you need to restore your backup of that library from before you imported the library

If you want to merge libraries they only way you can is with the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -

A new computer will have no effect on the issue - going back to before you made the error is the only way to totally recover -- short of that you need to us IPLM to find and remove duplicates and manually finish up what is not automatically found - and this is only a half way measure since you lose all edits, etc form the old library

My iPhoto library on my computer was empty - that is - I lost all my photos - possibly because I clicked on a message that appeared telling me that I needed to upgrade my photos so I clicked on it. That's when my iPhotos disappeared

I then opened my external harddrive backup and moved my back-up iphoto library into iphoto on my computer ----and YES now I have a massive mess. When I try to do anything on iphoto I get the whirling ball for a few minutes and can do nothing. This is happening often and happened even before I moved the iphoto library from my backup.

I also manually deleted several of the iphoto duplicates on my computer that appeared after moving them from the backup but did not empty them from the trash for fear of losing everything. I am getting very frustrated and would appreciate any help I can get. I got little help from the Genius at my local Apple Store when this problem started except to tell me that i needed a new computer.

I read in some of the support community discussions that iPhoto 11 could be purchased from Amazon. Would this solve my problem? My current iPhoto is iPhoto 6 Version 6.06.
