I want to use an internet application that is optimized for Internet Explorer, and explicitly does not support Safari, Firefox, or Chrome. How does Safari work with that?

Try going to Safari/Preferences/Advanced and enabling the Develop menu. Then go to Develop/User Agent and try the Internet Explorer Option there.
