Sync is greyed out on itunes

I recently purchased a new Windows 8.1 pc and initially it allowed me to authorize the computer and sync my music. Now when I hook up the phone up through the USB cable, itunes does not autolaunch and it doesn't recognixe the phone. I've signed in and out of itunes on both the phone and computer and have even redownloaded itunes. I'm at a loss.
