Q: Printing problems

My Canon printer suddenly stopped printing anything on my new IMAC - it has been working fine, then just would not let me print anything.  I've turned the printer on and off, shut down the IMAC and turned it back on, several times.  I've deleted the printer and added the printer.  I've downloaded the driver from the Canon website several times.  Nothing works.  Under the printer icon in the settings, it says "idle, default."  The only thing that I've done differently is I scanned a document and after that it seems nothing has printed.  Help!

Can you open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and select Printers in the left column. The right pane will show information about the MF4350 print queue. Can you copy all of this information and paste back here so I can check the setup.

Thanks for that. It looks correct for a direct USB connection.

Can you now open Printers & Scanners and select the MF4350 and then click on Options & Supplies. Then select the Utility tab and click on Open Printer Utility. This should open the Canon Office Printer Utility. Does this work and show an image of the MF?

I'm not sure what MF is there's a screen that comes up that lists my printer and below that a button with "Printer Information" and below that there are three tabs Dept ID Mgmt, User Information and Store Destination then a button on the bottom "Save Settings" not sure what they mean.

Sorry. Meant to add that you need to press the Printer Information button. This should open a Printer Information window with an image of the MF4350. Does this work?

Good. That shows we have a working path between the printer and the Mac. Press the OK button to close this window and Quit from the Canon Utility.

Now I need you to print a simple text file from TextEdit. Just one line of text will be fine. Before you print this text file, open Printers & Scanners, select the MF and click on Open Print Queue. Then print the text file and watch was is shown in the MF print queue. Assuming it will fail to print, with the MF print queue selected, click on the Printer menu and select Error Log. This will open the Console application with the cups error log selected. There should be text here about the failed print job. Can you copy this information and paste back here.

Thanks for that. Doesn't give me as much help as I was hoping for.

Did you have this printer installed with a previous version of OS X and then upgrade to 10.9? I am wondering if there could be an older driver file that is causing the issue.

I will see if I can locate an MF43xx series and do some testing and get back to you later today (Sydney time).

Thank you for spending so much time on this - I did install the printer driver when I first got my IMAC so it had the previous OS X; then I did install the updated 10.9.1; but when I went to the Canon website to reinstall the driver, the 10.9.1 showed up as the OS the Canon site detected before asking me to install the driver.  Thanks, again, for your work on this.

What time is it in Sydney?  It's 6:30 pm on the West Coast here in the USA.

Found an MF4380dn. Not the same model but the correct series that uses the same v10.3.0 driver.

On a new install of 10.9.1 I downloaded and installed the v10.3.0 driver and created the printer. It printed fine.

I then installed the MF ScanGear application and scanned a couple of documents.

But I am still able to print.

When you mentioned about it failing after scanning I thought that if the Scan setting was still enabled then this may be stopping you from printing. But this is not the case. With the Scan setting on and set to USB Scanning, I was still able to print.

So at this stage I have no solution to your issue. I will keep working on it and post any actions you could take.
