I have an iPhone 5 and when I'm playing music I can't change the song or start and pause on any of the shortcuts, what can I do ?

When I'm playing music and am on other things and swipe the shortcuts up, I am in able to change the song or pause and play, the same thing happens when I have locked my phone.

I have to keep unlocking my phone and going into my music to change the song, this is very frustrating!

I've gone onto settings but I am unable to find anything that will change this?
