Q: Macintosh SE Quantum 940-40-9402 scsi jumper settings

I'm trying to resurrect a 1989 Macintosh SE (800k floppy version) that I bought on eBay about a year ago. The internal hard disk had failed and I've just managed to get hold of an Apple stickered 40Mb Quantum model 940-40-9402 as well as a set of System 6.0.8 floppy disks.

I can boot from the syetem floppy and then put in the first utilty disk to get to the HD SC program (2.0.3). The first time I tried it the hard disk came up as SCSI 0: Quadra 700 (I think) which is presumably the system that the disk came from prior to my ownership but when I try to initialize it, after a few minutes it fails and all attempts to format it using 2:1 interleaving also fail after a few minutes of trying.

I notice that there are some jumpers on the disk itself but so far I've been unable to find any info on the correct jumper settings.

The disk was sold to me as working and it appears to be partly working so I'm not ready to give up on it yet. I can't download a newer version of the HD SC program as I don't have access to an older Mac with 800k floppy.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks

Andy

    Hi,

You may be able to find more information about this old drive if you use the Quantum type in a web search. Could it be one of the ProDrive models? Also, have a look at the following discussion:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24533099#24533099

The SCSI ID should be 0 for an internal hard drive (usually, no SCSI ID jumpers).

The web page below could possibly be of interest to you.

Any pre-1998 Macintosh computer (with a built-in floppy drive) can format/read/write 800K disks. If you could locate a suitable machine somewhere, the latest Apple HD SC Setup (7.3.5) can be found on the Older Software Downloads list:

    http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html#util

We cannot rule out that the reason for the failed formatting is in fact a faulty hard drive. One could of course try another formatting utility (such as Lido 7.5.6), but that would require a floppy modification or access from an external SCSI hard drive (or Zip drive).

Don't forget the external SCSI port for diagnostics and booting.  An external Zip Drive will let you use larger startup disks with more diagnostic software.  Post back if you would like more detail on that option.  Software like "Mount Everything" will give you more detail but it will not fit on a floppy.
