Can I use a newer 4th gen shuffle cable for the 2nd gen or do I have to use the docking station and cable?

Can I use a newer 4th gen shuffle cable for the 2nd gen or do I have to use the docking station and cable? I am trying to sync to my computer and charge, and it looks like the newer cable is not working with the older device. Need to know if I need to buy an older cable replacement or if there is something wrong with my newer cable. Hooking shuffle up to my macbookpro and it is not recognizing anything.
