iPhone stolen, Are my photos safe?

My iPhone 5 has fallen into the hands of a stranger. It's password protected and has popped up once on Find My iPhone, but now it's gone. Can the person who has my phone view or upload my photos if they plug it into their own Mac or something? My photos are still protected by the passcode even if they plug the phone into a computer, right?
