What all-in-one printers/scanners DO work with Maverick? I need a good scanner!!!

I upgraded to Maverick, and it seems, as with the rest of the world that upgraded, I am unable to use my printer scanner. This is a huge inconvenience. What scanner DOES work? I can't believe this is even a problem for people. Way to go. Least Apple could do is offer Lion for FREE again. I hate Mav.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Additionally, you should look at this article:

10.6 and later

The Apple Support site offers downloads for those scanners through these links:

HP, Canon, Epson, Brother, Lexmark, Samsung, Fuji/Xerox

Any that offer the printing and scanning according to the column, should be constantly updated by the vendor for printing and scanning through Apple's support updates. Others will either have to come from the vendor themselves, or through third party drivers.*

There are hundreds that work, at least you could do is be specific. You don't mention what scanner you have, what app you are using to scan or anything and just assume it's an Apple issue. Mavericks works just fine with most scanners that worked in Lion and Mountain Lion, however if the end user uses the scanner developers app to scan and it no longer works there are many alternatives, some that are free.

I have an HP Photoshop D110a. I HAD Lion, then upgraded to Mavericks. Then I couldn't scan anymore. Followed instructions to delete the printer driver then reinstall. Sadly, Apple can't find the driver for my printer. HP isn't the only printer that's having these issues. I've searched online & Epson, Canon, others are not able to work either. Problem is that the printers were not ready for the Mavericks upgrade. There are no driver updates for a majority of printers now.

So, my printer, that worked fine with LION, is not useable with Mavericks.

What are my solutions??? I'd love to figure out a way to keep using my HP vs buying a new one. As for 'free scanner apps', can you suggest some for photos? I haven't found any. Vue has watermarks all over their background.

The link I gave you 10.6 and later says it is supported on 10.9.

Did you follow its directions precisely:

Important: Use Software Update before connecting a printer or scanner [emphasis mine]. This updates your Mac's database of the latest supported printer and scanner models. If you don't use Software Update before attempting to connect a new printer, you may not see available software when you connect your device.

Software Update's link for HP is also at the HP.

If it doesn't work, then it is possible the firmware of the multifunction is old, and needs to be replaced by HP. Contact HP and tell them they list themselves as compatible on Apple's

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4670

And the upgrade using the link

http://support.apple.com/kb/dl907

is not working for you as instructed in the quote above. Worst comes to worse, you could sell your multifunction on http://www.gazelle.com/ and find a scanner that definitely does work.

But remember, according to Apple's latest info from HP it _should_ work. If it doesn't then HP needs to give Apple more accurate info.

Yup, Image Capture is included right in OS X, have you tried it?

It does not work as I am in the same situation. I have an HP D110 Photosmart All-In-One printer and HP's tech support told me a few days ago that they don't have the drivers able to handle Mac 10.9.2 which I am running. The attempt to use 10.8 failed, too. A Mac tech support person suggested that I update my operating system and never thought to mention that such an upgrade may make a large portion of older printers non-compatible. I really feel this driver issue is ridiculous. Can't the big five companies get together and make sure that a printer can print on both major operating systems? These constant upgrades create more harm than good and are merely used (I'm convinced) to get money out of the consumers who have to upgrade their harddware...as well as register their software to be sure they can get the newest versions. It's like BIG BROTHER meets raging BULL MARKET.

@ brofrono

Apple did not put a gun to your head to upgrade your OS only to find out not all software will be compatible. It is up to the end user to check their 3rd party software for compatibility prior to upgrading the OS. It is up to the 3rd party software manufactures to keep up w/Apple as well as other new technology. Not the other way around. 😉

Because not all my 3rd party software is ready for Mavericks, I too have not upgraded yet. I plan on soon. What I do is check the RoaringApp website as well as checking directly w/the 3rd party manufacturers. Wealth of info on that website. Perhaps you should too prior to upgrading in the future.

The "gun to the head" analogy is an obvious overkill. When a tech support person makes a suggestion without providing a warning, I believe he/she is remiss end of story. I think that software should not be released without full backward compatibility for at least as long as we are forced to keep tax records (7 years). And if it is released without such backward compatibility, than there should be a warning that states before downloading something like the following: "Warning: this upgrade may not be compatible with older hardware drivers. Please refer to the RoaringApp website, as well as check directly w/the 3rd party manufacturers before downloading." The lack of choice as consumers is a real issue here, and gives companies like Apple and Microsoft far too much leverage, which is too often used against us consumers to keep us in a consumer cycle purchasing new product and getting crappier and crappier results. If Apple was doing such a good job than when I pay a visit to Staples and they tell me that none of the printers that they carry will support my new operating system and I have to do some scanning ASAP for work than there is an obvious problem and it's not the consumers.

Such a warning does exist, it is in the license agreement

http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/

D. APPLE DOES NOT WARRANT AGAINST INTERFERENCE WITH YOUR ENJOYMENT OF THE APPLE SOFTWARE AND SERVICES, THAT THE FUNCTIONS CONTAINED IN, OR SERVICES PERFORMED OR PROVIDED BY, THE APPLE SOFTWARE WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, THAT THE OPERATION OF THE APPLE SOFTWARE OR SERVICES WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, THAT ANY SERVICES WILL CONTINUE TO BE MADE AVAILABLE, THAT THE APPLE SOFTWARE OR SERVICES WILL BE COMPATIBLE OR WORK WITH ANY THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE, APPLICATIONS OR THIRD PARTY SERVICES, OR THAT DEFECTS IN THE APPLE SOFTWARE OR SERVICES WILL BE CORRECTED. INSTALLATION OF THIS APPLE SOFTWARE MAY AFFECT THE USABILITY OF THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE, APPLICATIONS OR THIRD PARTY SERVICES.

Essentially, you should read the license agreements when you register any software, as that has been in there registration and installation documents since early on.

And every update includes an instruction to backup your data.

Before complaining about the lack of warning, it might pay to actually read what is given to you in plain sight. I do not work for Apple. I'm just tired of people complaining when the reason for their complaint has long ago been addressed. Read and you shall be informed.

Most people for good or for bad do not take the time to read through a legal disclaimer or full license agreement. While this may clear Apple from legal resonsibility, it does not mean that burrying a warning in a lengthy legal disclaimer is the best way to deliver a clear and effective message to customers.Judging by the number of people on this discussion board who are upset and confused, I think it is clear that communication could have been better regarding this Maverick upgrade and the risks involved. There will always exist loyal Apple users and members of the Apple community that will not see it this way. This is why there will always be a number of paying customers who will continue to be confused and disatisfied. The question still remains: is it possible for Apple with all its concern for customer satisfaction and software innovation, to communicate its warning messages more clearly and effectively? On a personal note, I chose to reformat my machine and go back to a 10.6 time machine back up. This resulted in my not having to purchase new hardware.

How do you propose to make this warning more up front? Not allow anyone into a store who has not understood this basic purpose? Not allow anyone onto their website who does not undersand the basic tennant that computers will always show human fallability, no matter how good one programs the program?

Because you do basically have to hold people's hands who are this dissatisfied. How many people did actually use the CD tray as a coffee cup holder? I'm sure it is far higher than any of us computer nerds would like to believe. Seriously, if you are going to use a computer, expect data to be lost.

Seriously if you are going to use a computer, expect that upgrades are not always essential on the Mac world, unless you desire some software that requires an upgrade. At this juncture, if you get there, understand anything that makes software out of sync with what has worked, could potentially break it. That's why a clone backup is so essential for any computer user's need.

The assumption that any computer is for all intents perfect needs to go out the window. The question becomes are you will to deal with the inconveniences of facing your own humanity? If not, maybe a computer is not for you.
