ATV dropping AirPlay streaming music

I just bought a new ATV, and when I use AirPlay to stream music it gives me about 3 seconds of playback and then goes silent even as my 2012 MacBook Air shows that the song is still playing through the ATV. Using my iPhone gave the same issue. The ATV is a week out of the box. Any ideas?

AirPlay works for low single digit minutes then drops.

Completely resolved. After tying everything from turning mirroring off to trying every device - 2 iphones and 2 ipads - with no resolution, hard wiring the ATV to my Netgear router solved the problem. Makes sense that since no device would work it must be something common to all devices. You shouldn't have to do that from ATV but I chalk it up to apples proprietary arrogance - AirPlay and ATV don't like going through a non-Apple wireless router. I know that sounds silly by that's the kind of stuff Apple does which is why I have resisted EVERYTHING apple until about 18 months ago. I prefer an industry standard that all can use, not their proprietary BS. (Dont bash me - that distracts from the technical forum).

However it's still mysterious because even though my A/V receiver is similarly hard wired to the router, AirPlay wold not work through my receiver's AirPlay function. ***? I have no answer for this..

I had this problem for a couple of years with different MacBooks and iDevices streaming to an Apple TV. The music would play for a few minutes then drop for a few seconds or more, then come back for no obvious reason. I finally spent a few hours digging in to the problem, and I think I have it beat. My ATV was always hardwired to my Airport Extreme base station (in a different part of the house). We have two other Airport Express base stations to extend the network. They were connected by wifi, not hardwired to the base station. I know this isn't the recommended setup, but I didn't realize how much trouble it was causing. I rearranged the Express devices so that one is hardwired (on the same switch as the ATV) to the base station. I removed the other Express from the network. This seems to have fixed the problem. In addition to eliminating (or at least greatly reducing the AirPlay dropouts), the new arrangement seems to have improved the wifi coverage in the house, so I only need one Express now. BTW, before I changed the wifi network, I also turned off Bluetooth on the MacBook, and that helped a lot (though didn't completely fix the problem). I haven't tried turning it back on yet.
