Can I install Windows 8 on MacBook Pro retina?

I need to install Windows 8 or 7 in Boot Camp in order to run my embroidery software. What specific form of Windows do I need to install a full version (not an upgrade, since I do not have Windows on the MacBook Pro)? Also, I understand that Boot Camp 5 will not run Windows 8.1. Should I buy Windows 7 and steer clear of 8 altogether?

My Bernina and Floriani embroidery software will run on either Windows 7 or 8.

Windows 7 will be more compatible. You can install Windows 7 Home Edition.

If you can find a copy of Windows 7 that is what you should use. If not your can buy Windows 8 and never upgrade, or update, it to Win 8.1.

Thank you. I was leaning more toward Windows 7, since it has been out longer and been 'customer-debugged' more. Thank you for the quick response!

Is the system builder DVD sufficient, or do I need the more expensive full version? This will be the only computer installation, so the system builder should work, right?

Yes but with that version, style, it is tied to the first set of hardware, computer, it is installed on. So in theory it can't be moved to another set of hardware, computer.
