Q: How do I initiate a Time Machine backup?
It keeps saying "preparing backup" and/or "next backup...". Running Time Machine from Applications folder doesn't show new backups.

When the 'preparing backup' message hangs around for too long, I eject the back up drive, wait a minute or so and reconnect it. That works for me.
If your Time Machine back up drive is mounted, you can simply double click the icon and explore its contents like any other drive. The trick is 'look but don't touch'. TM does not want us to mess with the contents.
It will have this type of look:
Scroll down to the bottom of the right hand column and you will see the date of the most recent back up.
