interesting answer, but I have just purchased 4th generation ipod shuffle 2gb and I can only store 100 songs. what am I doing wrong????

Chances are your songs are at a higher bit rate. Most likely 256 kbps.

There is an option to convert the songs to a lower bit rate when syncing with the iPod via iTunes (see the summary page). This would allow you to import more songs.

Correct if you go to the summary page right below the back up area you will see the drop down to lower the bit rate of the songs. You will not notice the difference when listening to the music. Some songs cannot be converted and you will get an error message sometimes letting you know which songs did not convert. But you will be able to hold so much more by doing this.
