How do I lock the screen prior to backup?

I get the message that the iPhone has not been backed up for two weeks, which will happen with I'm connectied to wi-fi and the screen is locked. How do I lock the screen? I have a screen passcode that I need to enter to open the iphone. But, there is no instruction on how to lock it.
